Parmer Hall

At the heart of a Dominican education are the arts and sciences. Like the university’s motto, Caritas et Veritas, these twin disciplines provide, and have for generations provided, students with the intellectual framework and the curiosity to engage ideas, solve problems and tackle injustices. The science component of this core is becoming increasingly complex as the demand for medical personnel, researchers and science teachers expands.

Not having a state-of-the-art science building is problematic for Dominican University, academically and competitively—which is why the university strategic plan identifies a new academic building as its top priority. That dream is now a budding reality, thanks to the leadership gift of John C. and Carolyn J. Parmer. A $36 million facility scheduled to open in August 2007, Parmer Hall is about so much more than state-of-the-art laboratories—it is about the academic future of the university: flexible teaching space, cutting-edge technology, facilities for faculty research, student commons, modern and more office space. The building—true to the gothic architectural style that characterizes campus—will be anchored on the first floor by a new Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence, showcasing instruction as the hallmark of the university. Tutoring, career services, service learning and other academic support services will be clustered on the lower level, while a two story atrium will provide the university community with much needed gathering space.

Parmer Hall will also include a courtyard, to be called Founders Court, which will recognize in perpetuity all of those Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters who have taught and worked at Dominican over the university’s more than 100 years of history. Sisters’ names will be individually inscribed into the foundation of the building as a tribute to their founding vision, upon which we build the future of Dominican University.
